Job Title: Food Service Assistant II

JOB GOAL: Work as part of a team during the school year to maintain inventory, prepare production records, order, prepare and serve meals. 

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, ODE
  2. Prior experience in the preparation and serving of foods in a school lunchroom or in a restaurant/cafeteria of equivalent size or large quantities.
  3. Prior experience with menu planning, ordering and operation and care for kitchen equipment.
  4. 21 years of age or older
  5. Experience leading and directing others.
  6. Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills are required.
  7. Ability to supervise student workers in the kitchen and cafeteria.
  8. Provides a working environment that encourages teamwork and communication.
  9. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, staff, parents and community members.
  10. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions with speed and accuracy
  11. Ability to maintain confidentiality
  12. Ability to assist in the planning and preparing of food for the proper nutritional needs of children within the requirements of the National School Lunch Program
  13. Knowledge of computer and ability to operate software programs related to job 
  14. Knowledge of modern methods of food preparation, operation of kitchen equipment, health codes and sanitation principles, and nutritional requirements.
  15. Knowledge of kitchen sanitation and safe work practices and ability to maintain cleanliness
  16. Perform physical requirements which may include:
  • Moderate degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequent walking, bending, reaching, twisting, and prolonged periods of standing
  • Exposure to noise, heat, cold, hot and cold surfaces, and sharp and moving equipment
  • Requires coordination and dexterity to prepare foods
  • Ability to move freely around the kitchen and storage areas to perform food preparation and food serving duties
  • Ability to supervise student helpers who work in the kitchen/cafeteria
  • Such alternative to the above requirements as the School Board or the Administration may deem appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may also be assigned.

  1. Plans, supervises, and participates in the preparation and serving of food according to the planned menu, and tested uniform recipes for the purpose of meeting student’s mandated daily nutritional requirements for the National School Lunch Program.
  2. Responsible for the operation of the kitchen. Oversees and participates in any aspect of food preparation, serving, cleaning, and dishwashing, etc. 
  3. Oversees and participates in daily money transactions/deposits, Point of Sale transactions. Maintains accurate accounting procedures and records in compliance with district, state and federal laws and regulations.
  4. Assist in coordinating kitchen workers/substitutes in the day-to-day preparation and serving of foods, and in the set-up/cleaning of equipment, utensils and food storage areas. 
  5. Estimates food preparation amounts for the purpose of meeting projected meal requirements and minimizing waste.
  6. Inspect kitchen cleanliness and safe operation of equipment, including proper equipment shutdown at the end of each shift, inspect proper storage of food items each day. Reports all equipment malfunctions to Nutrition Service Director for the purpose of maintain equipment in safe working order.
  7. Maintains accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law and District policy and regulations.
  8. Complete and maintain production records, HAACP, and other records as required by USDA. 
  9. Maintains and supervises proper food temperature requirements.
  10. Responsibility for inventory and weekly ordering for meals, commodities and paper supplies for the purpose of ensuring availability of items.
  11. Inspects the deliveries of food items and/or supplies for the purpose of verifying quantity and specifications of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements.
  12. Responds to inquiries of students, staff, administrations, and/or public for providing information and/or direction regarding food menu items or accounts.
  13. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students, families and staff.
  14. The employee is expected to be dressed and groomed in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  15. Follows all safety rules and takes all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure working environment.
  16. Complies with professional development requirements and participates in in-service programs as assigned
  17. Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may seem to be appropriate to the Board or Administration.
  18. Maintain satisfactory attendance, as defined in District policy and regulations (GCBD/GDBD).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, BONDING, AND/OR TESTING REQUIRED:

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid Food Handler's Certificate (OAR 333.175.000) or ServeSafe Certification.
  2. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance 
  3. Participate in mandatory district safety trainings annually, or as required
  4. May be required to obtain a First Aid and/or CPR Card or be a Designated First Aid Provider.

EVALUATION: Following the probationary period, performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
